A dog photo shirt is only as good as the picture you send. The photos that print well are close, taken in daylight or open shade, and sharp around the eyes — and almost all of them come from a phone, not a camera. We open every file by hand before printing, so we see the same three problems over and over: the dog is too far away, the light is wrong, or a chat app has squashed the picture on its way to us. This guide covers which photos work, which ones cannot be saved, and how to take a better one in five minutes.

None of this needs a good camera or any editing skill. Almost every custom dog photo shirt we print at Peckwear starts from an ordinary phone picture taken by someone who was not thinking about printing at the time.

What makes a good photo for a dog photo shirt?

Golden retriever photo on a custom dog photo shirt, illustrating good pet photos with sharp focus, clear eyes, close framing, and good lighting compared with blurry, distant, and dark photos.

A close, well-lit photo with the eyes in sharp focus. That is most of it. Your dog's head should fill a good part of the frame, there should be real light on their face, and the eyes should be clear rather than blurred.

Resolution matters far less than people expect. A phone photo taken from two feet away prints better than a professional photo taken from across a garden, because printing a small face from a wide shot means enlarging a tiny part of the picture.

    The five things we check

Every photo sent in for a dog photo shirt gets looked at for these five things, in this order.

What we check Works Causes problems
Distance Head fills a third of the frame or more Dog small in a wide landscape shot
Light Daylight, open shade, or next to a window Direct flash, or a dim room at night
Focus Eyes sharp, whiskers visible Motion blur from a moving dog
Angle Camera at the dog's eye level Shot from standing height, looking down
File The original photo from the phone A screenshot, or a photo sent through a chat app

The angle one surprises people. A photo taken from standing height shows a lot of forehead and very little face. Crouching down to your dog's eye level changes the picture completely, and it is the easiest fix on this list.

    Coat colour changes everything

On a dog photo shirt, dark coats are the hardest to print and light coats are the easiest. This is not about the printer. It is about how much detail the camera captured in the first place.

    Black and very dark dogs

A black dog in a shadow becomes a black shape with two eyes. There is no fur detail to print because the camera never recorded any. The fix is light, not editing: photograph them outdoors in open shade, or indoors right next to a window during the day. Never use flash on a black coat, because it flattens the fur and bounces off the nose.

    White and cream dogs

The opposite problem. In bright sun, a white coat loses all its detail and prints as a flat white shape. Open shade on an overcast day is ideal. If the only photo you have is a sunny one, send it anyway and we will work with it, but expect less detail around the chest and muzzle.

Merle, brindle and heavily patterned coats

These print beautifully on a dog photo shirt, and they are worth getting right. The pattern is the whole character of the dog, so send the sharpest photo you have, even if the pose is not perfect. We would rather have a sharp picture of a slightly odd expression than a soft picture of a lovely one.

Dogs with long fur around the face

Fine fur at the edges is the part that disappears first. A photo against a plain background, or against something darker than the fur, keeps those edges visible. We remove backgrounds for you, but we cannot invent fur that the camera did not capture.

How to take a better photo in five minutes

If none of your photos look right for a dog photo shirt, this takes almost no time and makes a real difference.

    1. Go to a window, or go outside into shade. Not direct sun, and not a dark room.
    2. Crouch down to their eye level. This single change improves most photos more than anything else.
    3. Get closer than feels right. Fill the frame with their head and shoulders. You can always crop out, but you cannot crop in.
    4. Tap the screen on their eyes so the phone focuses there rather than on their nose.
    5. Hold the shutter down and take a burst. Dogs move. Twenty shots gives you one sharp one.
    6. Get their attention last. A squeaky toy or their name, held just above the camera, buys you about two seconds of a good expression.

Turn portrait mode off. It blurs the edges of the fur on purpose, which is exactly the detail we need to keep.

The sending mistake that ruins good photos

Do not send photos through WhatsApp, Messenger or a text message. Chat apps shrink photos to save data, often to a fraction of the original size. The photo looks fine on a phone screen and falls apart when printed at chest size on a dog photo shirt.

Use the upload field on the product page, which keeps the original file. If you are sending from a computer, attach the photo to an email rather than pasting it into the message body, because pasting can re-compress it too.

One more: a screenshot of a photo is not the photo. Screenshots are saved at screen resolution, which is much smaller than the original. If the picture is on Instagram or in an old message, find the original file if you possibly can.

    Photos we usually cannot save

We will always try, and we will tell you honestly before printing if it is not going to work on a custom dog photo shirt. These are the ones that rarely come good:

    • A tiny crop from a group photo. Enlarging a small face turns fur into mush.
    • Heavy filters. Especially beauty filters, which smooth out the fur texture entirely.
    • Night photos taken with flash. Flat fur, bright eyes, hard shadow behind.
    • Screenshots of screenshots. Each round loses more detail.
    • Very old printed photos shot at an angle. Lay the print flat, photograph it straight on in daylight.

If your only photo falls into one of these, a name-and-silhouette design is often a better shirt than a soft photo stretched to fit. Our guide to memorial shirt wording and photo ideas covers that option in more detail, and it comes up most often with dogs who have passed away.

    What we fix for you

You do not need to edit anything before sending. A person here prepares the file for every custom dog photo shirt, and these are all normal parts of the job:

    • Removing the background — the sofa, the garden, the other dog.
    • Correcting colour — indoor photos often come out orange or blue.
    • Cleaning up old prints — scratches, creases and fading.
    • Cropping and placing — so the face sits well on the chest rather than near the collar.
    • Choosing between your photos — send several and we will pick the strongest.

What we cannot do is add detail that was never captured. No tool recovers fur from a black shape in a dark room. That is why the photo matters more than anything else about a custom pet shirt order, and more than any other choice you make on a dog photo shirt.

How many photos should you send?

Send up to ten for one dog photo shirt. You do not have to decide which is best, and we would rather choose from several than work with one that was picked for the pose instead of the quality.

If you want two dogs on one shirt, send a clear photo of each rather than one picture with both in it. Separate photos let us size each face properly, which is how our two dog shirt designs are built.

Ask for a design preview as well. We email you the layout before printing, so if we picked the wrong photo or cropped it badly, you say so and we redo it. Nothing goes on fabric until you approve it.

    Before you order

Still not sure whether your photo will work on a custom dog photo shirt? Send it over first and we will tell you honestly, before you spend anything. We would rather say "that one will not print well, do you have another" than take an order and disappoint you.

    Frequently asked questions

What photo works best on a dog photo shirt?

A close photo taken in daylight or open shade, with the eyes in sharp focus and the camera held at the dog's eye level. The head should fill a good part of the frame. Phone photos are completely fine.

What resolution does a photo need for shirt printing?

Less than people think. For a dog photo shirt, framing matters more than megapixels. An original photo straight from a modern phone is plenty, as long as the dog is close in the frame. A tiny crop from a wide group shot will not work however many megapixels the original had.

Why do black dogs not print well?

Because a dark coat in low light gives the camera no fur detail to record, so it prints as a flat black shape. Photograph a black dog outdoors in open shade or beside a window in daylight, and never use flash.

Can I send a photo on WhatsApp?

Please do not. Chat apps compress photos heavily, which looks fine on a phone screen but falls apart printed at chest size. Use the upload field on the product page, or attach the original file to an email.

Can you print an old photo of my dog?

Usually yes. Lay the printed photo flat and photograph it straight on in daylight rather than scanning at a low setting. We clean up scratches, creases and fading as part of preparing the file.

Do I need to remove the background myself?

No. We remove backgrounds, correct colour and crop the image as a normal part of every order. Send the photo exactly as it is.

Can you put two dogs on one shirt?

Yes. Send a separate clear photo of each one rather than a single picture with both in it, so each face can be sized properly.

Can I see the design before it is printed?

Yes. Ask for a preview and we email you the layout. If the crop is wrong or we picked the wrong photo, say so and we redo it. Nothing is printed until you approve it.
